SLATER GROWS A ‘STACHE’ FOR “MOVEMBER”

VICTORIA - Boundary-Similkameen MLA John Slater is participating in Movember, a social movement where men around the world grow mustaches during the month of November raising money and awareness for prostate cancer.

“I used to have a mustache when I was a young adult, but I haven’t had one for about 30 years, and it does get a lot of second looks,” says Slater. “People see the mustache and ask me about it, which gives me a great opportunity to talk about such an important men’s health issue and increase awareness of prostate cancer.”

During the month formerly known as November, clean shaven men grow their moustaches all month long, attracting support from friends and family in the form of donations. The money raised goes to Prostate Cancer Canada for the development of programs related to awareness, public education, advocacy, support of those affected, and research into the prevention, detection, treatment and cure of prostate cancer.

“Prostate Cancer isn’t spoken about too often and when colleagues here at the legislature were talking about this fundraising event I thought it was a brilliant idea. I am looking forward to next year already and based on the response from people this year, I am sure there will be many more participants in this great event,” says Slater.

Movember will continue to shift the habits and attitudes of people, creating awareness for men’s health risks and increasing early detection, diagnosis and effective treatment.
